When I realized being unique is not as unique as I thought, it made me really think about the processes I use to start my work. When we look at art we can see two pieces from two completely different artists and see similarities where one could say that has already been done. So trying to stand out and avoid similarity to other artist is one of the things I try to accomplish while working on a piece. I divide my work into simplicity and complexity by bringing various materials together to create images, sculptures, sketches, and designs that have a personal touch to what is represented. I prefer sculpture, but have dedicated a lot of time to sketching. Having lots of sketches is like having an idea bank right in front of me. When I take a sketch, it sparks an idea that I can take and form into something more. Changing things in a piece to alter how we perceive it can have an impact on the viewer. Making changes such as adding a pattern over a realistic image, combining different materials, or even turning a piece upside-down can change the interpretation or even the way we distinguish it from other art.
